FAME is a European research network in the field of hybrid and ceramic multifunctional materials, funded by the EU 6th framework programme. Hybrid materials consist of organic and inorganic components, and have new or enhanced properties for applications in chemistry, biology, electronics and other areas. FAME aims to combine this new field with ceramic materials research, in order to find new materials and generate technological breakthroughs.
Apart from supporting a number of concrete research projects, FAME creates a permanent infrastructure for integrated and multidisciplinary research. This includes initiation of European university degrees in materials science, a FAME Research Fellow programme, sharing of large research facilities, and a computer network with databases and communication tools. The integration will be made permanent by creation of a European Multifunctional Materials Institute, with an independent legal and financial structure.
About 200 researchers and 50 PhD students in 7 countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, UK, Portugal, Israel) are involved in FAME. 30 industrial companies have expressed their interest to participate in the FAME research and educational activities.
